Retailers urged to ensure vegan fashion is 100% animal-free
New guidelines have been set to ensure that vegan fashion is really 100 per cent free of animal products. The guidelines, set by the BRC, come after the trade body was inundated with requests from fashion consumers trying to source vegan products for the first time.
The fashion industry is trailing behind grocers, where one in five of all new products launched last year were vegan. Businesses now need to examine every material used in a product including the ingredients of glues, dyes and waxes.
Under the guidelines, retailers should not claim a product is sustainable simply because it is “vegan”. Meanwhile, vegan-labelled items should also be providing an alternative to a product that is traditionally made with animal products.
