NO Sunday shopping in Croatia
Retailers complain the new law will adversely affect the economy, forcing layoff and shop closings. They want a repealing of the new law.
The law was
passed Dec 30 after heavy campaigning from the Catholic Church, which
successfully argued that the explosion in consumerism since the fall
of communism has taken an adverse effect on popular attitudes towards
faith. In a country just shy of 4.5 million, the country has 25 major
shopping malls, along with countless other strip malls and
franchises.
Exceptions to the ban include bakeries,
newsstands and flowershops, and stores located in hospitals, gas
stations, and bus and train stations. Shopping over the Christmas
holidays and summer is also allowed under the law.
