Warsaw is ready to stop the import of Ukrainian cereals under national jurisdiction
Poland will stop the import of Ukrainian wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower under its national competence, if the European Union does not extend the deadline of the import ban until September 15, Polish Minister of Agriculture Robert Telus announced on Wednesday in Karpacz, Poland.
The head of the ministry made a statement to journalists at the press conference organized at the 32nd International Economic Forum, after discussing the issue of grain imports within the framework of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH), which brings together the agriculture ministers of the European Union member states. He announced: at the informal meeting that ended on Tuesday, Poland confirmed the position supported by the other four EU member states (Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia), according to which the ban on the import of Ukrainian cereals should be maintained even after September 15, the measure should be to be extended until the end of the year.
Telus saw it as follows: the current EU decision on the September 15 deadline is “in no way substantive, but of a political nature”
He said: Warsaw is in favor of the list of products subject to the import ban being flexible. This led to a “longer debate” between the five EU member states advocating the extension of the embargo, as Bulgaria, for example, was interested in the import of sunflowers due to the processing industry operating in its territory, the Polish minister reported. He said: Poland would also include raspberries among the banned products. Telus also said: Poland supports the requirement of EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski to use EU means to support the solidarity corridors for grain transit.

Prior to the press conference, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on social media site X (formerly Twitter) that on Wednesday he presented the arguments supporting the Polish position to Janusz Wojciechowski and asked for his “very sharp, clear intervention” in the grain issue. The Prime Minister announced that his government will not leave Polish farmers alone and will discuss other measures to stabilize the Polish agricultural market.
