József Váradi: Wizz Air is committed to the Hungarian market in the long term

Wizz Air remains committed to the Hungarian market in the long term, and they will strive for stability, reliability and predictability in the future – emphasized József Váradi, the airline’s CEO, during a background discussion in Budapest on Friday.

He stressed that Wizz Air is a Hungarian airline, started in Hungary, “its roots are here”, and is a significant employer.

He acknowledged that the airline carried 7.4 million passengers in Hungary in 2025, and according to their plans, this could reach 8.3 million in 2026. The number of their employees working in Hungary is 1,500, but their additional activities in Hungary – servicing, education – generate significant additional jobs through their impact on tourism. They fly on 87 routes from Budapest, and in 2026 they will operate 42,000 flights, which is 23 percent more than in 2025. The seat capacity in 2026 is 8.9 million seats, a 19 percent increase compared to the previous year.

During the background discussion, József Váradi announced that they will once again have flights from Budapest to Sofia, four times a week from July 2026.

The CEO of Wizz Air highlighted that the airline has carried more than 500 million passengers globally since 2004, its fleet exceeds 250 aircraft and it flies more than a thousand routes on a network level.

József Váradi emphasized that the airline pays special attention to safety, uses aircraft representing the latest technology are used and their pilot training is of a high standard.

In response to a question, the CEO said: they are striving to maintain their current favorable position in the market in terms of schedule and punctuality, and the necessary capacities are available for this. They are also working to obtain the necessary flight permits for the American route, so that it will be easier to fly with charter flights when the opportunity arises.

Wizz Air will achieve sales of 1.3 billion euros in the third financial quarter between October and December 2025, which is an increase of 10.2 percent on an annual basis. In the third quarter, the company’s EBITDA was 176 million euros, which is an increase of 12.2 percent compared to the same period last year. In the same period, its loss amounted to 139 million euros, which is 42.2 percent less than in the same period of the previous year.
