Wizz Air has changed its original plans
WizzAir Abu Dhabi is expected to put its new, long-range A321XLR aircraft into service only from 2026, while in Saudi Arabia the airline has given up on establishing a local subsidiary with 50 planes. The Saudi market would now be developed more as an inbound destination – revealed in the interview of CEO József Váradi.
In 2022, WizzAir concluded an agreement with the government of Saudi Arabia on the establishment of a joint airline, in which a fleet of 50 aircraft was planned to be stationed. Nevertheless, the airline has now decided to develop Saudi inbound tourism with European flights instead. The new long-range A321XLR aircraft will first operate on the London-Gatwick-Jeddah route from March 2024.
József Váradi said in another interview that the WizzAir subsidiary operating in Abu Dhabi will put the A321XLR planes into service in 2026 at the earliest. The airline is awaiting the introduction of the improved Pratt & Whitney GTF Advantage engine, which is better suited to the hot and dusty environment of the emirates. This new engine will be more economical and more powerful than the current one, which is crucial in the conditions there.
