PET bottles are changing: more recycled plastic is being added to them
The EU regulation came into effect on January 1, 2026, according to which all PET bottles must contain at least 25 percent recycled plastic. This ratio will increase further in the coming years: by 2030 it could be 30 percent, and in the longer term it could be up to 50 percent – writes vg.hu.
The aim of the regulation is to reduce the use of fresh plastics, as their production involves a significant environmental burden. However, the change will also be noticeable to consumers: the color of the new bottles may be slightly yellowish or darker, and their transparency and shine may differ from what was previously customary.
It is important to emphasize, however, that this does not represent a quality defect: the new bottles remain just as safe, hygienic and easy to use. The biggest change will therefore be aesthetic – the appearance of the bottles will be aligned with sustainability goals.
