ATM usage is changing: you must be able to withdraw at least HUF 150,000 from every ATM
A bill was recently submitted, according to which every settlement must have an ATM. At the same time, the draft law also changes the maximum amount that can be withdrawn in a single transaction. This change may also affect OTP Bank, which operates the largest ATM network.
On April 1, 2025, a bill was submitted, according to which every Hungarian settlement must have an ATM. Bankmonitor experts also noticed a provision in the law regarding the limit amount for cash withdrawals.
The text of the bill includes the following:
“The upper limit of the payment transaction value for cash withdrawals from a payment account using a cash-substituting payment instrument from an automated banknote dispenser located in Hungary – with the exception specified in paragraph (2) – may not be lower than one hundred and fifty thousand forints per transaction.”
This practically means that they must be able to withdraw at least 150 thousand forints from any domestic ATM in a single cash withdrawal transaction. This limit amount is 75 thousand forints under the current rules.
Of course, it is possible that a given person’s daily cash withdrawal limit related to their bank card, based on their current framework contract, is below 150 thousand forints. This case is an exception according to the draft. At the same time, the customers in question must be ensured that they can increase this daily cash withdrawal limit resulting from their own contract to at least 150 thousand forints.
