Festive dinner for four people in one package
Between November 15 and 17, the volunteers of the Magyar Élélmiszerbank Egyesület will collect non-perishable food items offered by customers in 150 Tesco stores, which will be delivered to disadvantaged people living in the vicinity of the stores. Tesco is joining the campaign for the 15th time, and in order to facilitate charity this year, it is placing pre-prepared donation packages in 109 hypermarkets nationwide, each of which contains the ingredients for a complete main meal for a family of four. As in previous years, the supermarket chain supports the operation of the Food Bank with an amount equal to 20 percent of the value of the donated products.
This year, Tesco customers can help people in difficult situations living near the stores in a simpler way than ever before. In the non-perishable food collection campaign of the Magyar Élélmiszerbank Egyesület from Friday to Sunday, in 109 Tesco hypermarkets across the country, pre-prepared donation packages are waiting for those who enter the stores. The packages contain the ingredients for a complete main meal for a family of four – pasta, beef tomato sauce, dark chocolate pudding and ingredients for a delicious pudding dessert.
“During the weekend, of course, we also welcome other durable foods, in a total of 150 Tesco stores. Even a bag of rice, a bar of chocolate, a box of biscuits, a jar of jam, canned food, a carton of UHT milk can make the Christmas of those in need more beautiful. We ask Tesco visitors to hand over the products intended for donation after payment to our volunteers wearing green vests at the collection points next to the cash registers. Last year, Tesco customers collected a total of 134 tons of donations, which corresponds to a total of nearly 320,000 portions of food. We are confident that the campaign will be similarly successful this year,” said Balázs Cseh, president of the Hungarian Food Bank Association.
According to reports, 34 percent of Hungarian parents did not eat enough to feed their children at least once[1], and 13 percent of Hungarian 7-year-old children are malnourished[2]. At Tesco, we do more every day for local communities, including those in need living in the vicinity of our stores. We have been participating in the campaign of our strategic partner, the Food Bank, for 15 years, and we are happy to experience the selfless help of our customers in supporting those who do not even get food on their table at Christmas. This year, we want to make donating even more convenient with donation dinner packages available in more than half of our stores, but of course we welcome any other non-perishable food items in our 150 stores as part of the campaign from Friday to Sunday. And in order for even more people to join this important cause, we drew attention to the food collection in Széll Kálmán tér with an unusual public installation. We hope that during the three days, as many donated food items as possible will arrive, and we will once again support the work of the Food Bank with 20 percent of their value.”
– said Nóra Hevesi, Tesco-Global Zrt. communications manager.
