EU protection for Makói onions
The European Commission picked up Makói onions on the narrow range of protected products known as the European Union list. The Hungarian specialty, was picked up on the list with Cerna Hora, a Czech beer.
No one can use the name or geographical indication of those products that are under EU source protection. The Brussels-protection also means that the EU helps to advertise the product more widely. From Hungary only three products had been protected; Szeged and Budapest salamis and Hajdúság horseradish . The list has a total of some 850 traditional-type products – reports privatbankar.hu.
