EU spokesperson: Energy crisis resulting from Iran conflict will not be short-term
We should not be under the illusion that the current crisis causing high energy prices will be short-term, said Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, the European Commission’s spokesperson, in Brussels on Wednesday.
In response to a journalist’s question, the spokesperson said that the Strait of Hormuz plays a significant role in the European Union’s energy supply, as it is a key transport route in the global energy market.
He added that in the case of jet fuel and diesel, the proportion reaches 40 percent.
On a global level, about 20 percent of the world’s oil and LNG traffic passes through the Strait of Hormuz, which clearly shows the strategic importance of the region, he added.
Itkonen highlighted that the obstruction of traffic through the strait has already had a noticeable impact on the markets, but he did not want to speculate. about how quickly the situation can change. As he said, however, it is already clear that the energy crisis will be protracted, and no significant improvement is expected in the short term.
