The Hungarian High Court is re-examining Wizz Air’s commitments – the compensation obligation expired five years ago
The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has launched a follow-up investigation into Wizz Air Hungary Zrt., after the commitment period that the airline undertook following a competition supervision procedure in 2019 expired. The GVH aims to verify whether the company has fully fulfilled its consumer protection obligations, including the payment of a compensation package worth approximately a quarter of a billion forints.
Proceedings initiated following unfair practices
During the competition supervision procedure concluded in the summer of 2019, the GVH uncovered several deceptive practices related to the Wizz Flex flight ticket additional service. As a result of the investigation, Wizz Air agreed to provide significant compensation – a total of nearly 250 million forints – to consumers who had used the service since 2010.
According to the agreement, the company credited the amount to the Wizz account of the affected passengers, which could be used for five years. Those who did not wish to use this option could request a cash payment by providing a bank account number. After the deadline, the company will transfer the unused credits to the SOS Children’s Village Foundation.
The commitments also included the transformation of information practices and the launch of a targeted educational campaign that drew attention to the consumer rights of air passengers.
GVH is investigating, Wizz Air is cooperating
According to the GVH statement, the competition authority will in each case check in detail whether the companies comply with the commitments they have made and made mandatory by the authority. If they experience shortcomings or missed deadlines, they may even impose a significant fine.
In a statement sent to our editorial team, Wizz Air emphasized that it will continue to cooperate with the authority and will provide the GVH with the data necessary for the follow-up inspection.
