New insecticides can be used to protect against the American grapevine cicada

The National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) has granted an emergency permit for the post-harvest application of the insecticides Karate Zeon 5 CS and Klartan 24 EW to help protect against grapevine flavescence dorée (FD). The insecticide Karate Zeon 5 CS can be used nationwide between August 20 and November 20, 2025, while Klartan 24 EW can be used between August 22 and November 22, 2025, in farms and home gardens.

The vector of the grapevine flavescence dorée phytoplasma (FD), the adults of the American grapevine cicada, can be found in vineyards until the end of September and the beginning of October after the plant protection period and the end of the harvest. The adults are infectious throughout their lives. For this reason, the spread of FD continues after the harvest.

Vineyards are defenseless against the disease during this period

The Karate Zeon 5 CS insecticide, which has an emergency permit, can be used nationwide in grapevines from August 20, 2025 to November 20, 2025. It can be used after harvest against the American grapevine cicada (Scaphoideus titanus) and applied a maximum of two times at a dose of 0.25 l/ha with a spray volume of 800-1000 l/ha. The Klartan 24 EW insecticide can be used nationwide in grapevines from August 22, 2025 to November 22, 2025. This agent can also be used after harvest, a maximum of two times at a dose of 0.2-0.3 l/ha with a spray volume of 600-1000 l/ha. Karate Zeon 5 CS is available in small packaging in the III. distribution category for small garden users, so it is also possible to protect against the American grapevine cicada in home gardens.

When using the products, the occupational safety and environmental protection regulations specified in the license document must be strictly observed

It is important that the maximum number of applications must not be exceeded. They can be used in the same area with a maximum of two applications during the entire vegetation period, so where a treatment with one of the products has already been carried out this year, it is only allowed to be applied once more.
