The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic bird flu virus on a breeding turkey and a liver goose farm in Békés County. The authority draws attention to the fact that full compliance with epidemiological regulations is essential in order to prevent and control epidemics. The affected flocks are being eliminated.

The disease was confirmed on two poultry farms in Békés County by the Nébih laboratory. The bird flu appeared on a breeding turkey pre-rearing farm with 7,600 birds in Békésszentandrás, while in a liver goose flock with 5,500 birds in Orosháza. In both flocks, increased mortality was observed, and in addition, neurological symptoms, lethargy, and decreased feed and drinking water consumption were also observed on the turkey farm.

The Nébih laboratory detected the H5N1 subtype of the virus from the samples – in both farms.

The authority established a 3 km radius protection zone and an extended surveillance zone around the Békésszentandrás farms, while a 3 km radius protection zone and a 10 km radius surveillance zone around the Orosház farm. The affected flocks are being eliminated and the epidemiological investigation is currently ongoing. Nébih continues to emphasize the importance of full compliance with epidemiological rules, as the disease is also present in wild birds. Efforts must be made to ensure that the virus cannot enter poultry flocks from wild birds by consistently applying biosecurity measures.
