The government provides further significant assistance to the domestic dairy sector
The main goal is to stabilize the operations of domestic milk producers and processors, strengthen the market positions of Hungarian products, and ensure the long-term competitiveness of the dairy sector despite the extremely difficult European market environment. The payment of production-related dairy cow support will exceed 23 billion forints in two installments. Thus, since the beginning of autumn, a total of more than 32 billion forints in targeted support has been received to support the work of those active in the sector, announced Minister of Agriculture István Nagy on his community page.
The Minister explained that the State Treasury began the second phase of the payment of production-related dairy cow support on December 3, 2025, thus more than 3,000 producers received 7.5 billion forints. In the first phase of the advance payment, 16 billion forints of support were paid to those affected. Together with the 8.4 billion forints of temporary national milk support financed from national sources at the beginning of November, the amount spent on targeted support for sectoral actors since autumn has exceeded 32 billion forints.
István Nagy stressed that these payments are particularly important at the moment, when the European milk market is in an unfavorable situation. The European Union’s domestic production has increased this year, but its export opportunities have narrowed, putting increasing pressure on domestic producers, among others. In order to have accurate information on market processes, and in particular on incoming quantities, the import registration regulation has been supplemented with liquid milk, Gouda and Edam cheeses and butter.
Therefore, rapid and decisive government intervention became necessary, as a result of which the government initiated negotiations with the sectoral actors in the Ministry of Agriculture, and with the producers and milk processors as well as with the trade actors in the Ministry of National Economy. The aim is to maintain the solvency and competitiveness of Hungarian producers and to strengthen the presence of their products on the shelves. These include the amendment of the regulation on dairy products in the Hungarian Food Code, which has come into force, which includes, among other things, the fact that Trappist cheese is round as a quality requirement. This measure will help increase the share of cheeses produced in Hungary in supermarkets, he added.
In addition to domestic and EU subsidies, a separate credit line of 50 billion forints is available to milk processors through the Sándor Demján Program. The government’s attention also extends to the content and expiration of contracts between milk producers and processors, so that every producer can safely sell the milk they produce. The most important thing is that every farmer finds a contractual partner and has a stable market, the minister stressed.
