New measures to eradicate bird flu epidemics
Waterfowl farmers who agree not to produce for three years may receive state support, announced Minister of Agriculture István Nagy on his social media page. The Ministry of Agriculture will examine all possible means to reduce the risk of bird flu epidemics.

The Minister also drew attention to the fact that this measure increases the safety of livestock farms and improves the further operation of the poultry sector. He explained that, along with the suspension of production, farmers must also undertake not to keep any poultry in the designated area, not to establish new poultry farms in the areas most affected by bird flu, and not to establish new waterfowl farms throughout the country.
In addition, no one else can continue to keep poultry in the area affected by the cessation of production
István Nagy highlighted that the aim of the support is to minimize the risk of avian influenza epidemics, which primarily affects waterfowl farms, by reducing the density of farms. The majority of avian influenza outbreaks occur in the counties of Bács-Kiskun, Békés and Csongrád-Csanád, where the density of farms is typically high. The program offers compensation support to the small producers most exposed to the risks for a three-year suspension of their production activities. Applications are expected to be submitted in May, for a budget of approximately 2 billion forints.
The regular appearance of the avian influenza virus causes serious losses for the entire Hungarian poultry sector
The geographical density of waterfowl flocks is a fundamental risk factor for the extent and management of epidemics. The measure could significantly reduce the number of avian influenza outbreaks, as well as reduce the negative market effects and disease control restrictions on the poultry sector.
