Based on the positive experiences of the opening of the first hybrid smart store in Hungary in the spring, Coop Szeged Zrt. is already planning to automate new units with Laurel Kft.’s technology, the companies told MTI.

According to their information, in the Szeged store, which was launched in cooperation between the two companies, 8,500 people have already made purchases in the night-time, automated system in four and a half months, and despite the significant increase in turnover resulting from the extended opening hours, the inventory shortage has not increased. The artificial intelligence-supported system has also uncovered three theft attempts.

The announcement quotes István Bessenyei, founder and owner of Laurel Kft., the company that carried out the development, as explaining that one of the central elements of the 247 Shop solution is the Veesion artificial intelligence-supported camera system, which analyzes customer movements without identifying faces and immediately alerts the remote dispatch service to suspicious behavior and gestures – for example, if someone hides the goods in their bag or consumes the product in the store.

These automatic alerts significantly facilitate the work of remote surveillance that monitors multiple cameras at the same time, but also help with subsequent proof, so that it quickly becomes clear when, where and how the theft occurred. Thus, unmanned operation essentially poses a lower risk than traditional operations – he added.

János Kelemen, CEO of Coop Szeged Zrt., explained that the new type of store has been performing stably since its launch, exceeding expectations, and the operation of the artificial intelligence has also proven itself in every respect.

Since May, the Coop Szeged Zrt. Szent István tér store has been offering traditional service during the day, and in fully automated mode, without staff outside normal opening hours. In the unstaffed mode, the store can be used with a phone application. The store, which has a sales area of 150 square meters, offers 4,000 items to customers.
