The prices of poultry products in Hungary have risen significantly in recent months, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH). According to a report by RTL News, the prices of chicken legs, wings and cut-up chickens also increased noticeably from June to July, but the highest price increase was for chicken breast fillets.

The price of chicken breast increased by 8 percent in a single month and by 17 percent year-on-year. A similar trend can be observed for other products: eggs increased by an average of 17 percent and turkey breast fillet by 12 percent compared to last July.

Since these goods are subject to the margin cap, the current price increase indicates that supplier costs have increased, not a change in retail chain prices.

Lajos Braunmüller, editor-in-chief of Agrárszektor, said: “feed costs represent the largest part of the costs of poultry farming, and energy is the second. If neither decreases, but both increase, then the consumer price of poultry products may also increase, provided that producers can enforce it.”

According to the expert, the price of almost all poultry products can be expected to increase further in the coming months. The background is the increasing drought situation: according to the Hungaromet forecast, precipitation is expected in the second half of next week at the earliest, until then the territorial extent and severity of the drought will continue to increase.

According to the analysis of the HUN-REN research institute, the long-term drought most threatens the crops of corn, potatoes and apples. In the case of corn, this is particularly worrying, as it directly affects the prices of poultry meat and eggs through feed prices.
