Retail prices of tobacco products in Hungary have increased again since January 2026. The Hungarian Regulatory Authority (SZTFH) published the latest price lists on December 31, according to which the prices of a total of more than 150 tobacco products increased between January 1 and January 5 – including cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, smoking tobacco and products intended for heating.

According to data from the SZTFH, the prices of 36 cigarettes, 33 cigars and cigarillos, and nearly 40 types of smoking tobacco increased at the beginning of January. The January 5 round affected an additional 89 products, including another 36 cigarettes. The price increases affect several well-known brands, typically at price levels of 2,000–2,700 forints in the case of cigarettes.

The price of tobacco products behaves differently compared to other FMCG categories due to the legal environment: while some basic foodstuffs may experience periodic price decreases, price changes for tobacco products are typically one-way. The prices are announced by manufacturers and distributors, and the SZTFH publishes the new retail selling prices, as regulated by decree, no more than twice a week, which may come into effect on Monday or Thursday.

The current increase further increases the price pressure on tobacco products in retail, while the room for maneuver of tobacconists remains limited due to regulated pricing.
