Aldi and Lidl cut prices of chocolate products
German discount retailers Aldi and Lidl are lowering prices of chocolate and chocolate-based products, easing pressure on consumers after years of rising costs.
Aldi announced on Thursday, January 29 that numerous items from its private-label brands Moser Roth and Choceur are being permanently reduced by up to 50 euro cents per bar or pack. Lidl followed later the same day, cutting prices on a total of 27 products.
At Aldi, the largest price reduction applies to the 400-gram pack of Choceur Choco Peanuts, which now costs €2.49 instead of €2.99. According to the retailer, other chocolate products are being discounted by between 10 and 36 cents.
Lidl has also implemented significant cuts. For example, the price of chocolate-covered salted pretzels has been reduced by 50 cents to €1.49 for a 140-gram pack. According to the trade publication Lebensmittelzeitung cited by the online edition of Stern, Lidl is undercutting its competitor on more than a dozen products.
Chocolate prices have been a major concern for consumers in recent years, driven largely by soaring cocoa costs. Cocoa prices rose for two consecutive years, reaching record highs in December 2024, with futures peaking at $12,931 per tonne in New York and £10,100 per tonne in London. Since then, prices have fallen sharply, creating room for retailers to pass on savings to shoppers.
