Pollution of Lake Tisza decreased by another 3.2 tons – The Youth PET Cup is over
The 10 teams of high school students who made up the field of the Youth PET Cup came from all over the country, as well as Transcarpathia and Transylvania. During the event held on Lake Tisza between July 1 and 6, 2023, more than 3.2 tons of waste were cleared from the river and its floodplain in 5 days. The Youth PET Cup started where IV. The Tisza Lake PET Cup ended in June. Thus, the waste balance of competitions involving Lake Tisza – in 2023 alone – is already 9.7 tons. And summer isn’t over yet!
The Youth PET Cup (IPK) is a special Tisza-Lake water tour, where getting to know the beauties of nature, social experiences and games come together in a river-cleaning campaign.
The organizer of the Tisza PET Cup, which started in 2013, the Natureszétéfilm.hu Tudományos Filmműhely Egyesület, decided to organize the IPK with the routine gained from many years of river cleaning. The volunteers of the PET Cup, better known as the “petkalóz”, have so far removed a total of more than 320 tons of pollutants from the Tisza and its tributaries. About 60% of this enormous amount was returned to the material cycle thanks to careful selection.
Thanks to the support of the State Secretariat for Active Hungary, it was now possible to involve the younger generation in this noble struggle, as the entire program was free of charge for the schools applying for the IPK.
