On new roads: dm is moving part of its logistics processes to railways
dm continues the decarbonization of its logistics network, so this year the company will introduce combined transport in the transport chain (intermodal transport). Most of the route will be covered by rail, and pre- and post-transportation will be carried out by trucks by road from the production plants to the terminal and from the terminal to the distribution center. Intermodal transport also affects dm’s distribution center in Páty. The company expects to save 400 tons of CO2 by the end of 2025, and 700 tons of CO2 are expected to be saved by 2026.
By July 2024, the 14 suppliers of the distribution center in Enns (Austria) and the 13 suppliers of the dm brand distribution center in Páty in Hungary will be converted to a combined form of delivery. This primarily helps to bridge long distances from suppliers in Belgium, Germany, France and Sweden. Most of the route will be moved to rails, but the section before and after the terminal will still be carried out on public roads by truck. The goods do not need to be repacked in the meantime, because the entire assembly is moved during the journey. dm’s own brand distribution center moved into the 17,000 m2 warehouse hall of HelloParks in Páty at the end of 2023, and supplies the warehouses of the 12 dm countries from here.
“Intermodal transport is currently experiencing a renaissance in the logistics sector, as it has many advantages, above all it contributes to the decarbonisation of logistics processes. If the distribution center in Enns, the distribution center of the dm brand in Hungary and all the potential suppliers of the other distribution centers of the dm countries switch to this combined form of delivery by 2026, then up to 700 tons of CO2 savings will be available annually.”
– said Roland Kanyó, dm’s marketing and PR manager.
