A new trend in Budapest’s spas: attendance drops during heat alerts
Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Zrt. faced a new phenomenon this summer: during the extreme heat alerts, the number of visitors to the spas dropped significantly, which is unusual compared to previous years. Although the visitor traffic was generally good during the summer months, on the hottest days, when the temperature reached 37-40 degrees, the number of visitors was in many cases lower than expected. On the other hand, on the more pleasant, sunny days of 29-30 degrees, the baths were regularly full.
The capricious weather experienced during the long weekends also affected the number of visitors, which fluctuated between 13 and 15 thousand people per day. Due to the unfavorable weather, on some days only 50% of the capacity of the baths was filled.
During the summer season, Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Zrt. carried out several improvements. The popular wave machine was repaired on the Palatinus beach, and a new outdoor buffet was built in Pesterzsébet. Among the historic baths, the Lukács and Széchenyi baths are undergoing major renovations. At the same time, the planned reconstruction of the Dandár spa encountered unexpected obstacles due to problems with the slab structure, so the spa is expected to reopen only months later – we learn from the Infostart article.
Ildikó Borosné Szűts emphasized that the number of visitors fluctuated with the variability of the weather, ranging between 13 and 15 thousand people per day. During the long weekends, it happened that only 50% of the capacity of the baths was filled due to the cloudy and stormy weather.
