New bill would protect traditional checkouts in large stores
The leader of the Christian Democratic People’s Party faction, István Simicskó, has initiated a legislative amendment that would make it mandatory for commercial units larger than 400 square meters to maintain at least one staffed checkout. The proposal aims to ensure that customers – especially the elderly – are not forced to use only self-service checkouts.
According to the politician, several pensioner organizations have indicated that they are concerned that more and more stores only operate automated checkouts, where the payment process is often difficult or confusing for them. Simicskó stressed that the benefits of digitalization cannot be questioned, but it is important that there is still a place for human presence in commerce.
The bill would not prohibit the use of self-service checkouts, but would only ensure that customers can choose: they can pay at a machine or with personal service, with a bank card or in cash. The aim of the proposal is not to stop automation, but to maintain equal opportunities and a customer experience for all ages.
The topic has recently become increasingly prominent in the retail sector. In addition to the continuous spread of self-service technologies, there is also an increasing amount of criticism, especially from customer groups that are less comfortable with technology. The KDNP proposal is expected to spark a lively professional and social debate in the coming months.
