A new type of fraud has been noticed at self-service cash registers
In the city of Spring, Texas, a new type of fraud has come to light at Walmart’s self-service checkouts, which was brought to the attention of an observant customer. An anonymous person speaking to Classic Rock 96.1 radio said that he and his friend found suspicious items on the block they received after their purchase, the Money Center reported for the people.com.
The essence of the fraud is that the perpetrator starts to buy a prepaid Visa card at a self-service checkout, but does not complete the transaction and then leaves unnoticed. Staying nearby, he waits for an unsuspecting customer to use the same cash register, hoping he won’t notice the unpaid item already added. In this way, the purchase of the card can be charged to the account of the next customer, without him noticing.
Customers found a random $20 “charge” and a $4.94 Visa” item on their account that they did not purchase. It turned out at the customer service that they were the victims of a new scam.
Experts recommend that customers be especially careful when using self-service checkouts. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on the items on the screen and check the block carefully before leaving. If you find anything suspicious on your receipt or feel you may be a victim of fraud, call a member of store staff for assistance immediately.
If someone falls victim to such a scam, it is recommended to immediately contact the relevant store, notify the local authorities and notify your bank. If necessary, it is also recommended to seek legal assistance in order to clarify the situation.
This new type of fraud is yet another reminder that you should be extra careful when using technology and self-service systems to avoid unpleasant surprises.
