A new variety of tomato has been added to Lidl’s shelves – Herencsényi seedlings for biodiversity
The diversity of landscape varieties plays a key role in adapting to the constantly changing environment, weather and market demands. Now the Herencsényi landscape variety tomato has also been added to the National Variety Register and will also arrive on Lidl Hungary’s shelves – announced the Ecological Agricultural Research Institute (ÖMKi).
Lidl and ÖMKi have been working together for the seventh year, working to make Hungarian landscape variety tomato seedlings available to as many customers as possible. On Earth Day this year, they are sending a message about the importance of preserving biodiversity with a new landscape variety, the Herencsényi. Herencsényi canning-type tomato seedlings are now in stores for the first time, so that backyard farmers and hobby gardeners can contribute to preserving biodiversity in their own gardens.
The cooperation between ÖMKi and Lidl not only serves to promote sustainable farming, but also to support domestic producers. With the introduction of the new variety, healthy, nutrient-rich tomato juice and tomato sauce will also be available in winter for those who carefully store their harvest.
In addition to Herencsényi, the popular Máriapócsi cocktail landscape variety will also be available this year. The organic seedlings grown by the Zsámboki Orsiherba Biokert have strong stems, fast growth and are resistant to fungal diseases, thus providing an excellent experience of success even for novice gardeners. Cocktail tomatoes are ideal for fresh consumption, and due to their full sweetness and delicate aroma, they can be an excellent ingredient for summer and autumn dishes.
Landscape varieties are populations created through natural and human selection, the genetic diversity of which is key to adapting to local conditions and preserving the independence of farmers. The diverse genetic background helps to make plants more resistant to the extreme effects of climate change, while also enriching the gastronomic offer.
The success of the domestic landscape tomato seedlings is not only outstanding among customers: in recognition of the eco-seedlings, the project won the Highlights of Hungary award and, in 2021, the OMÉK Tradition and Innovation Award in the Agricultural Economy.
