New opening hours could make farmers’ markets more attractive
This article is available for reading in Trade magazin 2025/10.
According to a representative online survey conducted in Hungary, Italy and the United Kingdom, 64.5% of respondents had shopped at a farmers’ market in the previous six months. The highest rate, 75%, was measured in Hungary and the lowest, 51% in the United Kingdom.
Although the willingness to buy is high, many are deterred by physical distance: this is a problem for 52% of respondents – most notably for the British. The second most common reason for staying away is higher prices (35%) than in supermarkets. Hungarians were more likely to cite opening hours and lack of information as problems.
“There is consumer demand and openness for these markets, but operators and decision-makers must also adapt to modern urban lifestyles. It is worth adjusting market hours to better suit the rhythm of city dwellers”,
told Áron Török, a professor at Corvinus University.
