New caps are coming to PET bottles: lighter body, more recycled plastic, bioplastic lid

According to plans, the proportion of recycled plastic in bottles will increase significantly by 2030, while the thinner bottle body saves weight and material consumption without compromising strength. The non-removable cap – although inconvenient for many consumers – reduces the dispersion of materials during collection and sorting, thus making waste management more efficient and increasing the yield of secondary raw materials.

The new cap designs are designed by manufacturers to offer a more secure closure, easier opening and multiple reclosure. Waste management organizations and environmental associations support the change: a higher proportion of secondary raw materials use reduces post-treatment costs and provides economic benefits throughout the supply chain.

What does this mean for trade?

• Shelf unit price and logistics: lighter bottles result in lower shipping weight and a smaller carbon footprint; optimization of unit stocks is expected.

• Return systems: the cap remains on the bottle, which speeds up the return process and reduces contamination; continuing consumer education is warranted.

• Brand message: bioplastic/biodegradability and higher recycled content are tangible sustainability claims, but credible certification and compliance with “green claims” rules are important.

If manufacturers’ commitments are met, the market will see bottles that are more easily recyclable, require less material, and are more environmentally friendly – ​​and manufacturers and retailers should prepare in advance for the logistical and communication transition.
