The popularity of sauvignon blanc has grown by leaps and bounds in our country
Sauvignon blanc is becoming more and more popular here, there is almost no Hungarian wine region where such wine is not produced – says Antal Benesch, head winemaker of the Veszprém Archdiocese Winery. Sauvignon blanc is not only popular in Hungary, it is now one of the most popular white wines in the world. Not by chance: it goes well with many types of food, its freshness makes it an ideal drink for both warm summer and pleasant autumn days, and its taste and aroma are closer to the younger generation of consumers.
“Sauvignon blanc has never been more popular than it is now. There is hardly any Hungarian wine region where this grape variety is not grown. This is an exciting variety, because it can be used to make a fresh, fragrant, fruity, as well as a very characterful, fuller-bodied white wine.”
– says Antal Benesch, head winemaker of the Veszprém Archbishop’s Winery, adding: he expects that sauvignon blanc will not lose its popularity in the coming years.
The grape variety comes from France, in the Loire Valley, but it started its journey to conquer the whole world from New Zealand, where the first vineyard was planted in the late 1960s, and since then more than 27,000 hectares of sauvignon blanc have been produced. Today, this variety can be found in virtually all major wine-producing countries, in addition to France and New Zealand, it is also a popular variety in Chile, the Republic of South Africa and the United States, for example in California’s Napa Valley, and even in Hungary, on at least a thousand hectares are cultivated.
