TVE: the rise of the fair trade market in Hungary has stalled
The rise of the fair trade market in Hungary has stalled in the past two years, but the trend reversal can already be felt – the Association of Conscious Buyers (TVE) informed MTI on Tuesday based on its 2022 measurement.
The essence of fair trade is that regardless of the general world market prices, the participants agree on a price that reflects the material and labor costs of the producers. In each case, a unique price is created, taking into account the current economic, social and ecological conditions. By choosing a fair trade certified product, consumers contribute to ethical production and take action against child labor and the exploitation of agricultural workers, it was emphasized in the announcement.
The association detailed that since 2014, the first year covered by the data, the fair trade market in Hungary was marginal at HUF 68 million, but it started to grow dynamically. In two years, until 2016, the market grew sevenfold, and between 2016 and 2017, the turnover increased sevenfold again to HUF 3.6 billion. The turnover of fair trade products exceeded HUF 6.9 billion in 2020, which was an absolute record year.
