Bence Tuzson: consumer protection can be one of the priority areas of the Hungarian EU presidency
Consumer protection is one of the most significant challenges for Europe, so it can be one of the priority areas during the Hungarian EU presidency as well – the Minister of Justice said on Thursday in Budapest, at the book launch event of the Economic Competition Authority (GVH).
Bence Tuzson emphasized that the enforcement of consumer rights also affects the safety of families, which is why the government has always considered it important. In Hungary, many state organizations are affected by this area, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) and the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) also deal with it. The last few years have brought many new tasks, the legislation had to be revised, thousands of inspections have started only related to inflation. The biggest difficulty today is perhaps the online world, cross-border purchases, internet marketplaces, because it is more difficult to enforce consumer protection regulations with sellers through them, he added.
According to the minister, the EU must create a common background law and jointly applicable rules for this area, because for the union it is a question of competitiveness in global competition. The GDPR rules are very important for the protection of personal rights, but the economic effects must also be taken into account. The United States does not comply with these obligations, so today American companies know more about European consumers than the member states themselves, which do not have access to such data, he explained.
