Tourism in December 2024: growing tourist traffic, different regional trends
In December 2024, the number of guests staying in tourist accommodation in Hungary increased significantly compared to the same period of the previous year. According to the Central Statistical Office (KSH), nearly 1.3 million guests spent a total of 2.9 million guest nights in commercial, private and other accommodation, which represents an 11 percent increase in the number of guests and an 8.4 percent increase in the number of guest nights compared to December 2023.
Domestic and foreign guest traffic
The number of domestic guest nights increased by 0.6 percent, while a 15 percent increase was registered in the case of foreign guest nights. Commercial accommodation accounted for 71 percent of the traffic, here the annual increase was 5.4 percent, while visitors spent 17 percent more guest nights in private and other accommodation.
Regional differences
The largest increase was recorded in the Győr-Pannonhalma tourist area, where 14 percent more guest nights were realized, while the largest decrease was recorded in the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza areas, where a decrease of 8 percent was experienced. In Budapest, the number of domestic guest nights increased by 1.6 percent, while a decrease of 2.8 percent was observed at Lake Balaton.
The number of foreign guests increased by 20 percent, and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 15 percent. The largest increase in the number of foreign guest nights occurred in the Pécs-Villány area (33 percent), while the most significant decrease was experienced in the Gyula area (22 percent). In Budapest, the number of foreign guest nights increased by 19 percent, while a minimal decrease of 0.8 percent was observed at Lake Balaton.
