Magical even without tourists: this has become Europe’s newest hidden gem
The accommodation portal HomeToGo has once again compiled a ranking of the most exciting, yet little-known tourist destinations in Europe. This time, a little-known, but all the more picturesque, Portuguese town topped the list.
Although popular European cities such as Paris, Barcelona and Rome continue to attract crowds, many travelers are increasingly looking for locations that offer a more authentic experience, a calmer atmosphere and more affordable prices. Such cities are often called “hidden gems” because they are not yet saturated in terms of tourism, but are rich in cultural, gastronomic and natural values.
The index developed by HomeToGo compiled the top ten list based on search trends, accommodation prices, restaurant and attraction selection, and weather. During the evaluation, lesser-known but high-scoring cities were highlighted.
Tomar, a medieval Portuguese city founded in 1160 and an important center of the Knights Templar, tops the 2025 list. Located in the province of Ribatejo, the town offers a rich historical heritage, narrow streets, colorful houses and a peaceful atmosphere for travelers who want to avoid the tourist crowds.
The other places on the list also include several cities that deserve more attention but have (for now) preserved their hidden charm. The list of “hidden gems” not only provides inspiration for those looking for alternative routes, but also draws attention to the importance of sustainable forms of travel that avoid overtourism.
