Demonstration at Tesco's Headquater
Angry dairy farmers protested outside Tesco's Cheshunt HQ, demanding an end to a “price war” they say will hit them in the pocket.
Around 50 representatives from all four
corners of the UK and the Republic of Ireland descended on the
company's head office. Protesters unfurled banners slamming alleged
efforts by the company to get producers to sign contracts campaigners
branded "intrusive".
David Handley, chairman of Farmers
for Action (FFA), told : "Tesco have recently started a cut
price war on products that we supply to the consumer. That, in the
supply chain, is going to have a detrimental effect on the industry."
He added: "There are a number of organisations represented that
have come here today from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales."
Tesco hit back at the claims and said
that farmers get a fair deal, and derided the protest as "small"
and short-lived. A spokesman said: "We pay the best price to our
dairy farmers. We've fought long and hard to make sure that they get
the best deal, and we're not about to do anything that will damage
that.
