Uber has too many promotions
Recently, several taxi drivers have indicated to Telex that Uber, which has returned to Budapest, has a significant impact on the market with its pricing campaigns. These promotions, in their opinion, distort the market and circumvent the official price, similar to Főtaxi’s previous coupon campaigns.
At the beginning of July, Uber offered passengers an 80 percent discount, which was valid for a maximum of HUF 3,800 for a maximum of five trips. After that, he launched a 50 percent campaign after the sale ended. In its response, Uber emphasized that it always complies with all local laws and regulations in the countries where it is present, so it only advertises passenger and driver promotions in Budapest that comply with all legal regulations.
Telex also contacted the Budapest Transport Center (BKK), which is responsible for the regulation, which stated that the capital’s taxi ordinance only contains provisions regarding the formation and application of fares. The regulation does not regulate how the passenger can pay, or what action he can apply when paying the properly qualified fare. According to BKK’s information, there have been coupon sales in the past, and it happens that services that mediate passenger taxi services offer various discounts to the traveling public.
Uber also reported that the number of drivers registered online has grown from 2,500 to 5,000 since launch. However, the company did not wish to disclose that they signed contracts with only a few of the registered drivers.
