Farmers marched with tractors in front of the European Parliament
European farmers protested in front of the European Parliament building against the reduction of agricultural subsidies. As is known, the European Commission’s plans would see more than 20 percent of EU agricultural subsidies withdrawn, severely affecting small and medium-sized farmers. At the same time, European markets would be opened wide to Ukrainian and South American food products.
Farmers held a tractor demonstration in Strasbourg today. The aim of the demonstration in front of the European Parliament building was to draw the attention of MEPs to the dangers of the Commission’s proposal. During the action organised by Copa-Cogeca, the European agricultural organisations, the participants – including representatives of the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the Association of Hungarian Farmers’ Associations and Cooperatives (MAGOSZ) – pointed out that the proposal could have serious consequences for European agriculture as a whole, and therefore asked MEPs not to adopt the Commission’s proposal. The European Commission presented its plans for the reform of the CAP and the EU’s budgetary framework in mid-July, while negotiations on free trade agreements with Ukraine and South American countries are also at an advanced stage.
This puts European farmers under double pressure and also poses serious food safety risks
Copa-Cogeca and several EU agricultural interest organisations, including NAK and MAGOSZ, have repeatedly indicated that they reject the Commission’s proposal, as Brussels has crossed a red line. The draft contains radical changes that would make the operation of European agriculture practically impossible and are incompatible with the original principles of the Common Agricultural Policy.
