It is in the interest of Hungarian farmers to be the first, so Hungary maintains a ban on imports against Ukrainian agricultural products even after the free trade agreement between Brussels and Kiev, said István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture.

The head of the ministry reminded that after the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Brussels had decided to allow Ukrainian agricultural products to be unlimited and free of charge. Thanks to the measure, high -quality Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products have been flowing uncontrolled and large quantities into the EU, thus impossible for the livelihoods and future of Hungarian farmers. In this situation, Hungary has introduced an import ban on these products to protect the interests of Hungarian producers, the minister added. István Nagy explained that on June 5, the unlimited and one-sided EU licensing of Ukrainian imports expired, and then the pre-war trade agreement between Ukraine and the European Union will come into effect. Accordingly, according to specified quotas, Ukraine may bring in the EU -free agricultural products to the EU, and after which they have been exhausted, it has to pay duty. Although the amount that can be imported is reduced, there is no guarantee that imports from the EU will not be stuck in border Member States, causing huge market disorders again. It is also a serious problem that regulation is still not a solution for one of the most sensitive products of the Hungarian point of view, in view of the fact that the duty is zero. In addition, even reduced quotas would give Ukrainian producers an excessive competitive advantage to the detriment of Hungarian farmers, primarily for meat and eggs. In this situation, Hungary continues to maintain a ban on imports introduced for two years to protect the interests of Hungarian farmers. It is time for Brussels to finally be on the side of European people instead of the excessive and criticism of Ukraine, the ministry leader emphasized. He explained that our country continues to stand up for the foundation to meet the same rules and traceability criteria for foods coming to the European Union as products produced in the EU. Ukraine should not jeopardize the Union’s agricultural markets, which Brussels must find a long -term and reassuring solution until this occurs, Hungary maintains restrictive measures, István Nagy underlined.
