SIÓ continues to fight to save bees
SIÓ-Eckes has announced that it will continue its cooperation with the National Hungarian Bee Association (OMME) that began last year. As part of this, the country’s largest fruit juice producer is supporting the organization’s work this year with, among other things, a wide-ranging educational campaign, monetary donation and national activities. In connection with World Bee Day on May 20, the professional organization also draws attention to the drastic reduction of the domestic bee population.
About a third of the crops consumed by humans benefit to some extent from the pollination activities of bees or other insects. These insects ensure good quality crops worldwide, such as strawberries, raspberries, apples or even almonds.
In recent decades, however, the situation of bees and other pollinating insects in the world has deteriorated to an extreme extent. Not only in our country, but also in Europe and worldwide, there is a tendency to decrease the number of wild Hymenoptera.
The lack of pollinators is already a phenomenon that can be experienced on a daily basis, and the effects of this are already being directly felt by professionals in Hungary. The stakes are high, since if bees completely die out, it could mean irreversible consequences for humanity. According to surveys, nearly 300,000 bee colonies die in the winter in Hungary alone. According to estimates, the rate of winter bee mortality has increased from 5-10 percent to 25-30 percent in the last 15 years, i.e. it has tripled in our country.
