Guar gum affair keeps on twist
Until Friday only 30 company denoted, that they used the Indian guar gum.
Two weeks ago the European Commission informed member states
of fears about dioxin levels in guar gum supplied by Switzerland's Unipektin,
after it was discovered to contain between 12 and 156 pictograms of dioxin per
gram of fat, according to Swissinfo. This is way over the EU accepted level of
one to six pictograms.
About 200,000 Hungarian businesses might have imported the
Indian guar gum. The comapies have to let to check their products, when they bulk
it, they have to pay HUF 3million penalty.
The assay costs HUF 250,000, what the companies must to
contribute.On Friday, chief veterinarian Miklos Suth warned Hungarian consumers to
avoid products containing guar gum, also known as E412, as it could contain
poisonous dioxin. The chief vet told food and drug producers not to use guar
gum unless they can show that it does not contain dioxin. In addition, he
issued an outright ban on its use in livestock feed.
