Cucumbers may become more expensive
This year’s cucumber season in Poland is facing extraordinary challenges: the market is characterized by high prices and limited supply, caused by the extraordinary weather conditions. Instead of the usual August supply peak, there is now a serious supply collapse, which has significantly increased the price of cucumbers. The wholesale price of pickled snake cucumbers currently ranges between 7-9 PLN/kg (645-830 HUF/kg).
The supply of free-range cucumbers also dropped significantly, which resulted in an increase in prices. Currently, the price of cucumbers for salad is 3-6 PLN/kg (275-555 HUF/kg), while the price of canned cucumbers is between 3.5-7 PLN/kg (325-645 HUF/kg). Although the weather in August was more favorable and this brought some expansion of supply, prices are still high.
The current state of the Polish market offers an attractive opportunity for exporters. The first import offers have already arrived from Turkey, where the price of free-range cucumbers is around PLN 3/kg (HUF 275/kg). In addition, pickled cucumbers from Russia are expected to appear on the Polish markets, which may alleviate the current supply shortage to some extent.
