The proportion of domestic food on the shelves of Slovak stores fell again last year, a trend that has been declining for nearly a decade and a half, according to data published by the Slovak Food Industry Chamber (PKS) on Monday, the Slovak public service news agency TASR reported.

Last year, the proportion of domestic food in Slovak stores was 40.4 percent on average. This represents a 10 percentage point decrease since the start of the reports in the segment in 2011, and a decrease of nearly one percentage point in a year-on-year comparison.

“Since the beginning of the measurements, the proportion of domestic food in Slovak stores was the lowest in 2017 – 37 percent – and then it showed a slight increase, but for three years it has been continuously decreasing again,” said Daniel Poturnay, president of PKS. He added that the figures also indicate that the competitiveness of domestic food producers is decreasing.

According to PKS data, last year, the highest proportion of domestic products in Slovak stores was milk (72 percent), water and mineral water (66 percent), wine (55 percent), as well as beer and dairy products. The proportion was lowest in the segments of sweets (11 percent), cooking oils (14 percent), canned goods (14 percent) and non-alcoholic beverages (20 percent).

According to the chamber’s statistics, the proportion of domestic food products by store type was – last year and traditionally – highest in the smallest stores, and lowest in hypermarkets and discount stores.
