Tokaj is Hungarians’ favorite wine region – this is what a recent online survey revealed
The Tokaj wine region proved to be the most popular domestic wine tourism destination, according to an online survey conducted by Csodásmagyarország.hu in November 2025, which surveyed 1,658 respondents. 23% of respondents voted for the World Heritage wine region.

Nature and excursions are the main reasons for visiting

Wine tasting and cellar visits are the motivations for 20%, wellness services for 19%, and gastronomic experiences for 18%. Cultural programs received 8%, gastronomic events for 7%, and major festivals for 6%.
White wine is the most popular
According to data on wine consumption habits, 43% of Hungarian consumers prefer white wine, 30% choose red wine, and 16% choose rosé. Champagne reached 5%, sparkling wine reached 1%, while 5% of respondents do not consume wine.
The favorite specific wine type is aszú (16%), followed by olaszrizling (11%), merlot (10%), Bikavér (9%) and Cserszegi fűszeres (9%).
Tokaj’s tourism offer remains strong
The survey confirms: Tokaj remains attractive as a complex wine tourism destination. The settlements of the wine region – including Tokaj, Tarcal, Mád, Tállya, Tolcsva and Erdőbénye – offer walking and vineyard tours, wine bus tours, wine tastings and themed wine dinners.
Iconic sites of the region, such as the Hercegkút Cellar Village, the Tokaj World Heritage Wine Museum or the Borecet Manufactory in Bodrogkeresztúr, remain popular destinations.
