Egg producers: there may be a shortage of eggs due to the price cap
Working with full force, the producers are doing everything they can to have enough eggs for Christmas, but due to the price cap, a supply shortage cannot be ruled out in the longer term, the Association of Hungarian Egg Hybrid Breeders and Egg Producers told MTI on Friday.
According to the interest representation, there may not only be a problem with meeting the needs of the population, development and reserve formation may also be at risk if the benefit of egg production is taken away by the price cap. The measure is also opposed because it applies to all storage methods, sizes and packaging, while milk, flour and sugar only apply to one type of product.
They also fear that because of the official price, retailers will distribute fewer eggs, limit the amount that can be sold, and order smaller quantities from producers. This may cause a reduction in capacities, while Hungary is not self-sufficient either, and a fifth of the needs must be met from abroad. Importing does not reduce prices either, because eggs are not cheaper in other European states than in Hungary, they added.
According to the association’s promise, the producers will do everything they can, but the sector wants to consult with the Minister of Economic Development and the Minister of Agriculture. The current conditions are characterized by complete unpredictability, even though egg production is a time-consuming process, so the possibility of planning is very important – they justified the initiative.
