In the third quarter of this year, a decline in both egg production and consumption was observed in the United States, while the sector was characterized by increasing export performance in the European Union. In Hungary, international imports decreased, while fresh egg exports increased sharply, and domestic prices increased spectacularly – writes Agrárszektor.

According to the USDA forecast, US egg production may be 4% lower in the third quarter of 2025 than a year earlier, and an annual decline of 5% is expected compared to 2024. The situation is similar in consumption: per capita egg consumption may be nearly 4% lower than last year, according to a report by the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI).

According to data from the European Commission, in the first four months of 2025, the EU closed the foreign trade of eggs and egg products as a net exporter. Imports increased by 42%, reaching 50 thousand tonnes, but exports were much higher, at 137 thousand tonnes, an increase of 13%. The main target markets remained the United Kingdom, Japan and Switzerland. The packing house price of table eggs in the EU was almost 260 euros/100 kilograms in the first 32 weeks, which is 21.7% higher than a year earlier.

According to KSH data, Hungary imported 9 thousand tonnes of shell eggs in the first half of 2025, which is a 36% drop. Within this, imports of fresh eggs decreased by 21.5%, to 7.2 thousand tonnes. Exports show a mixed picture: exports of shell eggs decreased by 17.5%, to 5.1 thousand tonnes, while exports of fresh eggs jumped by 61%, to almost 1,000 tonnes.

According to the AKI Market Price Information System (PÁIR), in the first 32 weeks of 2025, the packing house price of caged table eggs (M+L) was 63.97 forints per piece, 30.3% higher than last year. M-boxed eggs increased in price by 28%, to 66.78 forints, and L-boxed eggs increased by 26%, to 77.17 forints. The price of tray eggs also increased significantly: M-boxed eggs by 31.5%, and L-boxed eggs by 35.9%. Deep-litter eggs cost 72.87 forints per piece, which represented a 26.9% increase in price.

In addition to the duality of global trends – American decline, European export growth – the market in Hungary is currently characterized by price increases and export expansion. Eggs thus remain a key food, the price of which sensitively follows international and domestic economic processes.
