The Association of Conscious Buyers examined ten different types of tofu, also available in our country, during a product test conducted jointly with Czech partners within the framework of international cooperation. During the test, three marinated and seven smoked tofus were scrutinized, including a chickpea-based product that offers an alternative for those with soy allergies.

The primary aspect of the test was the nutritional value, where the protein, fat and salt content was measured. Lidl/Vemondo marinated tofu stood out for its low salt content, which may be important for those who strive for a low salt intake. Alnatura smoked tofu produced the highest fat content and at the same time the highest protein content, which also proved favorable during tasting; the fattier tofu was rated as tastier.

The accuracy of the nutritional information on the product labels was also an important aspect of the investigation. According to the testers, there were slight differences in most of the products, but with the exception of Alnatura smoked tofu, all products contained either more or less salt than what was promised on the label. In the case of Lidl/Vermondo marinated tofu, for example, instead of the 1 gram of salt indicated on the label, 1.87 grams were found.

During the examination of the sensory characteristics, the general appearance, texture, aroma and flavor intensity, firmness, juiciness, pleasant taste, bitter and nutty flavor intensity, as well as the smoky flavor or the pleasantness of pickling were evaluated. The test showed that tasters can choose from the range based on their different preferences, for example Tesco/Plant Chef marinated tofu can be an ideal choice for those who prefer juicy tofu with a strong flavor intensity.
