Nébih’s no food leftovers program has received several international awards

The food waste prevention program of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) has achieved outstanding success in several forums. In addition to being selected as one of the top 3 environmental protection projects in the EU LIFE Awards 2023 competition, it is a great recognition that the European Commission’s Joint Research Center classified the No Residue program as an internationally recommended good practice.

The No Leftovers program was launched in 2016 among the first national food waste prevention programs in Europe. Thanks to its active and effective operation and intensive communication activities, by 2022 it reached every Hungarian on average 20 times with its messages about sustainable food consumption. One of the key focus areas of Maradék belen is childhood attitude formation, within the framework of which the complex educational material specially developed for this purpose has reached more than half a million children, and more than thirty thousand children and young people have personally participated in the trainings. The staff of the program also enrich the educational activities with activities. The drawing contest announced for this year’s summer vacation, for which elementary school and high school students are expected to apply until July 25, is such an actuality. Since its inception seven years ago, the program has been monitoring the amount of food waste generated in Hungarian households, far ahead of most EU member states, since this became an obligation of the member states in the EU only from 2020. A significant result is that, according to the latest data, household food waste in Hungary has decreased by more than a quarter since the start of the program.

And in 2022, he was invited to the European Commission’s Citizens’ Panel on Food Waste program and the European Consumer Food Waste Forum of the European Union’s Joint Research Institute, thus contributing to the food waste reduction objectives not only of Hungary, but also of the other EU member states.

It was recently selected as one of the top 3 environmental protection projects in Europe at the LIFE Awards 2023 competition. The official award ceremony took place in Brussels, in the building of the European Commission, where the head of the program, Dr. Gyula Kasza, personally received the plaque of recognition. At the end of June, the 16-member professional body of the European Consumer Food Waste Forum, led by the Joint Research Center of the European Commission, reported on the results of its 2-year work in the European Parliament. In the national program category, the experts chose the No Remnants program as a model program that is recommended to the attention of the EU member states.
