We go to specialist shops more often than the European average
There is great demand for fresh groceries all over the world and Hungary is no different. According to a Nielsen study, Hungarians buy bread and other bakery products most often: 68 percent of the survey’s participants purchase these fresh products 4 or more times a week and 28 percent do so at least 1-3 times a week. 45 percent purchase milk and dairy products 4 or more times per week and 44 percent buys it 1-3 times. 27 percent of Hungarians buy fruits and vegetables 4 or more times a week and 56 percent buy them 1-3 times. Meat and poultry: 10 percent purchase them 4 or more times per week and 60 percent buy them 1-3 times. Where do we buy these categories? Meat/poultry: 30 percent go to the butcher’s and 23 percent to the supermarket, while hypermarkets were mentioned by 21 percent; fruit/vegetable: 26 percent pick them up at the greengrocer’s, 21 percent at the marketplace, 15 percent in hyper- and 14 percent in supermarkets. The majority of Hungarian consumers buy meat/poultry, bread and bakery products and fruits/vegetables in specialist shops the most often. This indicates that the food retail structure is still rather fragmented in Hungary. In most of the examined European countries food retail is more concentrated, for instance the number one spot for getting fresh products is the supermarket in each category for 34-51 percent of customers across the various countries.
