Hungary needs more red onions
The EU onion market is showing improvement after the deficit period of the 2022 season. However, Hungary still needs imports, which are mainly provided by the Netherlands, but onions also come to us from abroad.
Looking at the situation in Hungary, although the domestic onion cultivation area increased by 3%, this did not reduce the amount of imports. In the last five years, the amount of domestic red onion has always ranged between 39 and 54 thousand tons, while the needs continue to reach an additional 50-60 thousand tons per year. Especially during the winter period, more onions are needed until the overwintering onions mature. This year, fewer onions arrived from Slovakia, Austria and Germany, but the EU’s largest exporter, the Netherlands, delivered the largest amount to Hungary again this year, 34% more than in 2022.
In addition, it is a novelty that Egyptian (996.7 tons) and Slovenian (668.5 tons) onions are also available in Hungary.
