More EU support to the beekeepers
The second cycle of the Hungarian National Beekeeping Program began two years ago may end succesfully. The third phase – starts in September and lasts until 2016 – can be even more successful because the available EU and national support sources can be an annual 4.7 million euros, (1.4 billion HUF) 670 thousand euros (200 million HUF) more than before – Tantó Sándor, competent of the Rural Development Ministry told MTI.
Since the program started in 2004, the number of bee families increased by about 30 percent, exceeding one million. On this basis, the bees are producing an average 20-25 thousand tons a year. However, due to this year’s cold spring and hot, dry summer, less honey can be obtained from the beehives, growers can expect less than half the quantity, compared to the previous years. (MTI)
