It produced more spring onions, but fewer leeks
According to KSH data, Hungary produced 2.67 thousand tons of new onions (green onions) in 2022, which is 35 percent more than the previous year.

Domestic spring onions are offered all year round at the Budapest Wholesale Market. According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of new onions increased by 12 percent (HUF 287/bunch) from 1 to 13 2024. per week compared to a year earlier. The wholesale price of new onions from Italy was HUF 259/bunch at the same time, which is 3 percent higher than a year earlier. With the expansion of domestic production, imported spring onions are no longer available this year.
According to KSH data, 1.05 thousand tons of leeks were grown in Hungary in 2022, which is 24 percent less than in 2021
Leeks, winter or shallot onions and chives are listed together in the KSH’s foreign trade database. The import of these products tripled to 3.81 thousand tons, and their export increased by 49 percent to 158 tons in 2023 compared to the year before. Domestic leeks are present on the Budapest Wholesale Market all year round, without import competitors. According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of leeks increased by 15 percent (HUF 334/piece) from 1 to 13 2024. per week compared to a year earlier.
