German discounter Aldi Süd is planning to eliminate hundreds of jobs at its headquarters in Mülheim, according to media reports.

Aldi Süd has reportedly confirmed the news to the German Press Agency (DPA) without providing the specific number of jobs at risk, ESM Magazine reports.

The decision will impact hundreds of roles in accounting, human resources, and purchasing.

It is a part of a process that reportedly began last year.

Aldi noted that it has always prioritised lean structures and processes, without mentioning any particular reasons behind the decision.

The German headquarters of Aldi Süd in Mülheim an der Ruhr employs 2,000 people.

The discounter has a workforce of 50,000 people across the country.

Its store network comprises around 2,000 outlets in Germany.

Potential Merger

Last year, several German media outlets reported that the Albrecht and Heister families – who own Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, respectively – were discussing a merger of the two branches of the Aldi empire.

The potential merger, which could be a ‘historic’ move, is still in the exploratory stages and would involve creating a joint holding company, with equal representation for both families.

In 2020, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd announced plans to combine approximately 100 private-label brands by the end of the year.

At the time, Aldi described the move as a logical step for the company to consolidate its market position and offer products at the best prices.

It also noted that it would consider improving the quality of some products by optimising their recipes to suit the changing preferences of consumers during the process of combining the brands.
